Reserve deputies serve in many capacities ranging from working uniform patrol service, providing search and rescue (SAR) assistance, managing special details as called for by the Sheriff, transporting prisoners and any other duties that may be required by the Sheriff's Department. Reserve Deputies also work closely with the department's full-time deputies in providing Homeland Security. The Reserve Division maintains the R.E.A.D.Y. Force (Reserves Available for Duty). These Reserve Deputies are able to respond to a call for service from the department within a two-hour, or less, time frame. These Reserve Deputies are available for call-out in times of emergencies or other situations which require a short response time i.e. natural disasters, missing person calls, SAR duties, among a myriad of other types of situations.

Reserve deputies receive no financial gain for their service and volunteer hundreds of hours of time per month to the Sheriff's Department. Reserve deputies are required to receive continuous training throughout the year, as well as, qualify annually with their service weapon. Reserve deputies are offered the opportunity to attend the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department Law Enforcement Academy where one can receive their APOST (Alabama Peace Officers Standards & Training) certificate and become a State certified police officer. Certified reserve deputies may work alone with full police powers.
