National
Youth Project Using Minibikes (NYPUM) is an exciting and fun-filled
opportunity for deputies to make a difference in the lives
of young people. NYPUM is an intervention program for kids
ages 10 – 15. Deputies work with NYPUM participants
in small groups to intensify lessons designed to improve positive
choices.
NYPUM
is a private, non-profit program which operates after school
and summers in communities throughout Jefferson County. NYPUM
started 25 years ago in California and now has program sites
throughout the country. The Sheriff’s program is the
first in Alabama! It all started when American Honda donated
20 minibikes for the Sheriff’s program. Deputies endured
nine days of training on the bikes, about the bikes and about
the program before any child ever rode one of Honda’s
minibikes.
Deputies
meet with participants’ teachers and parents to determine
what behaviors each individual young person needs to improve.
In order to share in the NYPUM experience kids must sign a
contract in which they agree to improve those problem behaviors.
As they comply with their personal behavioral contract they
are allowed more and more use of the minibikes. After successfully
completing the course and meeting the demands of their contract,
NYPUM kids go for a trail ride at Williamsburg Farms in West
Jefferson, courtesy of Ron and Don Kelly.
The
Sheriff’s NYPUM program operates completely on private
donations. Our strongest supporter is Honda of Alabama and
principals of Jefferson County schools. Principals allow deputies
to use school property as children learn to ride the bikes.
Local businesses contribute funds and refreshments. If you
