The Criminal Indentification
Services Unit is comprised of a Senior Latent Fingerprint
Examiner, 3 Certified Latent Examiners and an Administrative
Support Person. This unit processes, classifies and files
all fingerprint cards submitted by the Jefferson County Jails.
This unit does latent fingerprint comparison with prints lifted
from crime scenes for the Sheriff's Office and other local
agencies. This unit utilizes the state of the art, Automated
Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS) that compares latent
or ink prints with a database of offenders from across the
State, which is housed at the Alabama Bureau of Identification
(ABI) in Montgomery. The AFIS database currently consists
of over 1 million prints. In addition, this unit is responsible
for registering all convicted felons and sex offenders that
reside in Jefferson County. This unit also maintains the Jefferson
County "Mugshot" Imaging System that consists of
photographs from our Jail and other local agencies. Currently,
there are over 300,000 photographs in this system. |
