The Bessemer Division is responsible for all law enforcement service provided by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office in the Bessemer Cut off District. These services include patrol, criminal investigations and court services.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office also maintains a second jail facility with a capacity of 202 inmates.

The Vice and Narcotics Detail of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is responsible for suppressing illegal drug activity in both the Birmingham and Bessemer Districts of Jefferson County. Members of this detail participate in multi-agency drug investigations, perform undercover drug buys, issues bingo permits, investigate bingo related complaints, investigate illegal gambling complaints, pornography complaints, and assist the Criminal Division in drug-related homicides.
